SARGASSO FIELDS

Installation Directed by Philip Beesley, Copenhagen 2009

‘Sargasso Field’ was produced in Copenhagen Royal Academy of Fine Arts for an exhibition part of UN Climate Change Summit, and “Epiphyte Chamber” in Museum of Modern Contemporary Art in Seoul as part of its inaugural exhibition under the direction of Philip Beesley. Speculating an architecture of mechanical empathy, advanced technology of digital computation and primitive technologies are deployed to create a matrix of artificial ecology. Across each floating island, densely interwoven structures and delicate canopies made of tens of thousands of lightweight digitally-fabricated components are drawn together in nearly-synchronized breathing and whispers. This experimental new work explores intersections between media art, interactive distributed mechatronics and synthetic biology.
