BLUE BEARD'S CASTLE

Saito Kinen Festival 2011

As part of Saito Kinen Festival in Matsumoto,Japan, this scenography and stage design for an opera production was designed by Dorell.Ghotmeh.Tane Architects team. The stages for ‘Bluebeard’s Castle’ and ‘The Miraculous Mandarin’ composed by Béla Bartók, conducted by Maestro Seiji Ozawa, were designed to be performed consecutively in one evening, requiring it to be assembled and disassembled in fifteen minutes.

The stage for Blue Beard’s castle included 8 V-shaped panels, choreographed to embody the complex spatial relationships presented by the unfolding story. The mirror panels which were treated with electrically activated half mirror films further expanded the spatial vocabulary with transparency and reflectivity.

The two pieces were performed in National Centre for the Performing Arts in Beijing, Shanghai Grand Theatre and Matsumoto Performing Arts Centre in Japan, over 12 performances in 2011 and 2012.
